LUCHI vs. VERMES PART II

  • FC Dallas head coach Luchi Gonzalez is still undefeated against Sporting KC and its head coach Peter Vermes after FCD defeated SKC 2-1 on July 31 at Children's Mercy Park. The win brought Luchi's overall record against Kansas City to 5-0-1 since he took over in 2019. Still, as Luchi points out, historical records don't mean anything on game day.

Head Coach Luchi Gonzalez: "Things have bounced our way historically but that game on Saturday, there is no guarantee of anything. So, we have to know that we have the potential to take care of business and get a result. But things will only get harder, especially against a team that we had a favorable result at their home two weeks ago. We know that’s going to be on their mind."

UNBEATEN STREAK

  • With three wins and a draw in its last four games, FC Dallas enters Saturday's rematch with SKC in its best form of 2021. Dallas has outscored its opponents 9-2 over that run after settling on the attacking combination of Ricardo Pepi, Jesús Ferreira, Szabolcs Schön and Paxton Pomykal. FCD is also in the midst of an 18-game unbeaten streak at Toyota Stadium, with its last home loss coming almost a year ago against Nashville SC on Aug. 12, 2020. While Dallas is still just below the playoff line, there's a sense of optimism in the locker room.

Defender Nkosi Tafari: “Just from a group standpoint, there’s a more positive environment, positive atmosphere. We’re still not content with where we are…We’re still fighting."

THE HUNGARIAN COWBOY

  • Hungarian winger Szabolcs Schön earned his first Man of the Match award after assisting both goals in Dallas’ 2-0 win over Austin FC last Saturday, making it four assists in his last four games. The performance also earned the 20-year-old a place in MLS’s Team of the Week for the first time. Schön assisted Jesús Ferreira for FCD’s second goal against Austin with a clever cut back, a sign that the two forwards are beginning to get on the same page.

Midfielder Jesús Ferreira: “It’s a relationship that we built on the training ground. We’ve been getting used to each other. I’ve said it before, our movement is about getting to know where he wants to be, where I want to be and that’s important for the game. We don’t even have to look at each other, we already know where everyone’s going to be at.”
