NEW YORK CITY (Sunday, April 29) – FC Dallas (3-1-3, 12 pts.) fell to New York City FC (6-1-2, 20 pts.) on Sunday night at Yankee Stadium, snapping a six-game unbeaten run to start the 2018 season.

NYCFC took a 1-0 lead in the third minute of the match when Ben Sweat combined with David Villa down the left side. FC Dallas goalkeeper Jimmy Maurer dove back to collect the loose ball but NYCFC midfielder Jesus Medina stepped in front of him to finish off the chance, putting the home side ahead 1-0 early.

NYCFC was awarded a penalty kick in the 36th minute of the match after referee Ismail Elfath used video replay to determine that a shot from Anton Tinnerholm hit defender Reto Ziegler in the arm as he was turning away from the incoming shot. Villa sent Maruer the wrong way to give NYCFC a 2-1 lead with his 400th goal all-time for both club and country.

Maurer kept FC Dallas in the match with a huge save on NYCFC’s Yangel Herrera in the 39th minute. The build-up from New York culminated in a shot from Herrera through traffic from 12 yards out, but Maurer read the play well and made a diving save to his left side.

NYCFC took a 3-1 lead in the 69th minute, when Anton Nedyalkov and Villa collided at the top of the area. The ball deflected off of FC Dallas defender Matt Hedges, back into the path of Villa, who slotted home his second of the night to give the home side a two-goal advantage.
