Generation adidas Cup: FC Dallas 1, Flamengo 0

GA Cup Day 5

FRISCO, Texas -- The FC Dallas U-16s edged Brazilian side Flamengo, 1-0, on Field 4 at Toyota Soccer Center on Easter Sunday to take third place at the Generation adidas Cup.

FCD got on the board early when forward Bernie Zuazua (above) collected the ball near the top of the box in the fourth minute and hit a shot off the under side of the crossbar and into the back of the net.

Flamengo's chances of mounting a comeback were diminished early in the second half, when defender Lucas Santos was sent off for a rough challenge in the 38th minute. Despite playing with only 10-men, Flamengo did well to keep the match competitive, with goalkeeper Gabriel cutting off multiple FC Dallas crosses into the area in the second half.

But the Brazilian squad's attack couldn't break through as the FC Dallas backline limited their scoring chance for the remainder of the game and goalkeeper Charlie Furrer (right) calmly collected any threat that came his way.

The 1-0 result was Furrer's third shutout through five Generation adidas Cup games, earning him the Goalkeeper of the Tournament award, which was presented to him by FC Dallas first team head coach Oscar Pareja.

The U-16s and head coach Francisco Molina dedicated their win to their two injured teammates, Matthew Karasinski, who tore his ACL in a Development Academy match two weeks ago, and Duncan James, who injured his knee in the Generation adidas Cup semifinal match against Real Salt Lake on Friday night.
