STORY LINES

  • Momentum: FC Dallas returned to MLS play after the summer break with a marquee result: a 1-0 victory over in-state rivals Austin FC. But the win was even better than the score line would suggest. Dallas triumphed thanks to a 97th-minute winner from defender Nkosi Tafari, the latest game-winning goal in club history. It's exactly the kind of result the fans and players can rally around as Dallas makes a push for the playoffs over the last 10 games of the season. Now, it's up to the team to carry that momentum into its midweek matchup with St. Louis City, the top team in the Western Conference.
  • "Illarra": FC Dallas fans got their first look at the club's new midfield veteran, Asier Illarramendi, on Saturday. A former Real Madrid and Real Sociedad player, Illarramendi made his MLS debut off the bench against Austin FC and quickly showed why he made nearly 300 appearances in Spain's top division. The 33-year-old played 33 second-half minutes and helped Dallas gain greater control of the game with a number of clever one-two passes in midfield. It was only his first game but it's evident Illarramendi will be a big part of FCD's success this season. Now, the question is whether he'll see the field again this Wednesday in St. Louis. Considering he didn't have a preseason, it's unlikely Illarramendi can play 90 minutes, especially against a high-energy team like SLC. So, it's up to the coaching staff to decide whether it's worth risking him from the start, or if another second-half cameo is a better use of Illarra's considerable talents.
  • Rematch with SLC: Wednesday's game will be FCD's first experience at CityPark, St. Louis' new 22,000-seat stadium. The clubs did meet earlier this year, though, with Dallas earning a 2-0 win over the newcomers. There's a bit of an asterisk next to that W, however. The game originally kicked off on May 6 but inclement weather around Toyota Stadium forced it to be abandoned after 50 minutes with the score 0-0. Per MLS rules, the match was resumed a month later and Dallas was able to score twice in the remaining 40 minutes. A win is a win, as the saying goes, but it was certainly a strange one. You can guarantee high-flying St. Louis will be hellbent on getting some redemption when FCD visits CityPark Wednesday night.
