STORY LINES

  • First Time for Everything: It's a weekend of firsts as FC Dallas welcomes 2023 expansion side St. Louis CITY for the first time ever Saturday night. St. Louis has been the darling of the league to begin the new year, setting an MLS record for the best-ever start by an expansion team after winning its first five games. Since then, though, Bradley Carnell's men have hit the dip most brand new teams are so accustomed to and registered just one win in their last five. Still, St. Louis is second in the West and boasts an impressive 3-1-1 road record. While FCD has a 10-6-4 all-time record against expansion clubs (in inaugural meetings), Saturday's outcome is anything but a given.
  • Start of the Busy Season: Saturday's match is the beginning of a very busy part of the season. Including the matchup against St. Louis, FCD will play five games in just 14 days. What's more, two of those games are against in-state rivals: Houston Dynamo and Austin FC. There's no question that head coach Nico Estévez will need to rotate his team and manage players' minutes. But to what extent? Normally, you'd want your strongest XI against a second-place conference foe--especially at home. Still, with four more games and two Texas rivals on horizon, there's always the chance Estévez opts to rotate his lineup against the league's newcomers.
  • Gone (to St. Louis) but Not Forgotten: FC Dallas fans may see some familiar faces on the opposition this weekend. Johnny Nelson and Lucas Bartlett - both former FCD defenders - are now lining up on St. Louis CITY's backline. Nelson, still just 24, was drafted by Dallas in the first round of the 2019 MLS SuperDraft and went on to feature 30 times before joining FC Cincinnati and subsequently St. Louis, where he's started all 10 games this season. Bartlett was also an FCD first-round selection and made his club debut in the U.S. Open Cup before departing after one season with the club. The 25-year-old center back landed with St. Louis and has made four appearances so far (including three starts). You can bet the former Dallas duo would love to get one over their former club on their return to Toyota Stadium Saturday night.
