STORY LINES

Decision Day
We've reached the end of a long journey. The 2022 MLS regular season comes to a close this Sunday with all 28 teams facing off to decide the final playoff standings. The seven Eastern Conference games kickoff at 1:30PM CT and the seven Western Conference games start at 4PM, which is when FC Dallas and Sporting Kansas City will battle it out at Toyota Stadium. While FCD's all-time Decision Day record of 7-12-7 doesn't inspire too much optimism, its Decision Day home record of 5-3-3 is quite a bit more palatable. Dallas has faced SKC three times on the final day of the season and holds a 1-1-1 record over those games. The last time the two clubs played on Decision Day was back in 2019 (also at Toyota Stadium) and FC Dallas romped to a 6-0 victory, helping them secure a playoff berth. Nico Estévez and his coaching staff would love a similar result this time around. But it won't be easy. Although recently eliminated from playoff contention, Sporting Kansas City has been one of the stronger sides around the league over recent months and has accumulated 20 points out of a possible 30 from its last 10 games. With Peter Vermes' men currently enjoying a seven-game unbeaten run, FC Dallas will have to be at its best to secure all three points and enter playoffs on a high.

Home Playoff Chances
FC Dallas sits in third place in the West ahead of Decision Day. A top-four finish is of the utmost importance since it guarantees home field advantage for the first round of playoffs, at least. FCD will claim a top four spot with either a win or draw against SKC this Sunday. Dallas also has a chance of keeping third place despite a loss IF both LA Galaxy and Nashville SC fail to win their Decision Day games. The club can also maintain a top-four finish as long as one of LA or Nashville fail to win. Despite those scenarios, Dallas will be desperate for a win to build momentum heading into the post season. And what will help FCD get a win? A near full-strength squad. Winger Alan Velasco returned to team training this week after a month on the sidelines with a quad injury. His return, as well as the availability of fellow winger Paul Arriola after a red card suspension, is a huge boost to Dallas' front line.

On the Brink of History
Jesús Ferreira is on the brink of making FC Dallas history. The Homegrown forward tied the club's single-season scoring record of 18 goals (set by Jason Kreis in 1999 and Kenny Cooper in 2008) with a brace against LAFC last month. With the final game of the regular season looming, Ferreira will be desperate to score his 19th goal of the season to become the outright record holder and write his name into FC Dallas history.
