Story Lines

Midway Point: With 17 games played, FC Dallas has reached the midpoint of the 2025 MLS season. So far, Dallas sits in 10th place (three spots out of the automatic playoff places and one out of the play-in game round) with a 5-6-6 record. The biggest story from Eric Quill's first year as head coach has been the team's unique ability to win on the road while struggling to pick up points at home - a complete reversal of fortune from last season. The club's 16 road points (4 wins, 4 draws) are the most in the Western Conference and are tied for the second most across all of MLS, trailing just the Chicago Fire with 18 (6 wins, 0 draws). On the other hand, Dallas is one of two teams in the West with just one win at home – an unwanted record that’s almost unheard of around these parts. As the club embarks on the second half of the campaign, the home form will be the main focus of Quill and his coaching staff. If Dallas can replicate its road performances at Toyota Stadium, it won’t be long before the club climbs above the playoff line. They’ll have two chances this week, first against San Jose on Wednesday followed by San Diego Saturday night.

Availability Update: With Dallas coming off a bye week, it’s a good time for a quick player availability update. The club was shorthanded last time out (a 4-2 win over SKC on June 14) with suspensions for defender Lalas Abubakar (red card) and midfielder Kaick (yellow card accumulation). Now with both available once more, Dallas will just be missing the three injured players: defender Osaze Urhoghide (muscle injury) and midfielders Ramiro (muscle injury) and Paxton Pomykal (knee bruise). It will also be the first game without goalkeeper Antonio Carrera on the club’s roster as the Homegrown completed a transfer to Tigres of Liga MX late last week.

San Jose: The Earthquakes head to Toyota Stadium two points and two places above FC Dallas in the West. San Jose is enjoying a resurgent season under veteran head coach Bruce Arena and have suffered just one loss in their last eight games, while also scoring a league-high 35 goals this season. Their attack is now spearheaded by former LAFC and RSL striker Chicho Arango who’s notched nine goals for his new club already. And there’s another well-versed MLS striker to worry about. Josef Martínez, the 2018 league MVP, also joined the ‘Quakes in the offseason and hasn’t missed a beat, scoring seven goals in just 838 minutes this year. With those two forwards and Cristian Espinoza pulling the strings (4 goals, 8 assists), the Earthquakes promise to be a dangerous attacking unit for FC Dallas’ backline.
