Story Lines
Leading from the Front: FC Dallas' Designated Players have been producing the goods in recent weeks. Forwards Petar Musa and Lucho Acosta, the club's two DPs, have combined for six goals in their last four games. Musa has scored in three of the last four matches while Acosta scored a brace two weeks ago against SKC before setting up Musa's opener on Wednesday against San Jose. Together, the duo has scored 46% of FC Dallas' goals this season and is the focal point of Eric Quill's attack. With first-place San Diego FC coming to town, Dallas will need both Musa and Acosta at the top of their games once again.
Absences: Head coach Eric Quill may need to get creative with his lineup Saturday to manage some unexpected absences. For the first time since 2014, FC Dallas had two players shown red cards in the same game as the club fell 4-2 to San Jose Wednesday night. Midfielder Kaick was sent off in the 79th minute after a confrontation with Earthquake's forward Chicho Arango while defender Sebastien Ibeagha followed in his footsteps after fouling Preston Judd, a challenge the referee interpreted as preventing an obvious goal-scoring opportunity. With both players suspended for Saturday's match against San Diego, Quill will need to adjust his lineup according. And, with fellow center back Osaze Urhoghide still unavailable through injury, he'll likely turn to veteran Lalas Abubakar and 20-year-old Álvaro as his center back duo. Kaick's absence may not have the same structural impact as the young Brazilian was already a second-half substitute last time out.
San Diego: FC Dallas faces a tough opponent in the form of newcomers San Diego FC. Led by former FCD assistant coach Mikey Varas, San Diego is enjoying a fantastic maiden season in MLS and sit atop the Western Conference standings with 36 points and a stellar 11-5-3 record. Dallas learned firsthand how dangerous SDFC can be just last month, falling 5-0 in the clubs' first-ever meeting on May 3 at Snapdragon Stadium. That five-goal outing from Varas' men kicked off a run of form that has seen them earn 22 points from a possible 27 (7 wins, 1 loss and 1 draw in the last 9 games). Lastly, San Diego heads to Toyota Stadium for the first time three days after putting up another five-goal performance in a 5-3 win over the Vancouver Whitecaps in Vancouver Wednesday night.
