STORY LINES

  • The Injury Front: Just when we thought FCD's summer of injuries was over, it begins again. Alan Velasco, Geovane Jesus, Bernard Kamungo and Sebastian Lletget - all typical starters - have suffered injuries of varying degrees over the last few weeks. Velasco's injury is the mildest of the four and he'll hopefully be available after FCD's matchup with Real Salt Lake. On the other hand, Kamungo and Lletget are likely out for a few more weeks so its uncertain if we'll see them before the end of the regular season. Geovane Jesus unfortunately suffered an ACL tear and will be sidelined for 9-10 months. With such a heavy injury list, head coach Nico Estévez will need to manage his squad wisely as the team navigates this busy stretch of seven games over 21 days.
  • Six-Pointer: Wednesday's contest is the definition of a six-pointer. If Dallas defeats Real Salt Lake, not only does it earn three points, it also denies RSL three points. And every point counts at this point in the season, especially considering how tight the Western Conference is this year: Just six points separate Dallas in 11th to Vancouver in 4th. Luckily for Dallas, the club has one or two games in hand on most of the teams ahead of it, so that six-point gap could be erased very quickly. But that requires capitalizing on those games in hand, beginning with Wednesday's match against sixth-place Real Salt Lake.
  • Against RSL: Dallas and Real Salt Lake have already played once this year with FCD earning a dramatic win thanks to Bernard Kamungo's last-minute goal at Toyota Stadium. Estévez's team will look for a repeat performance at RSL's America First Field, a venue where he's already had success in his short head coaching career. Last year, Estévez led Dallas to a hard-fought 1-0 win in Salt Lake City in a game where RSL out-shot Dallas 25 to seven. Estévez would love to repeat the trick, although FCD will likely need to limit RSL to far fewer shots this time around.
