Story Lines

Farewells: FC Dallas' squad will look quite different when the players walk out of the Toyota Stadium tunnel Saturday night. Within the last week, the club has said goodbye to two regular starters: defender Marco Farfan and Designated Player Lucho Acosta. Farfan, who joined FC Dallas ahead of the 2022 season, transferred to Tigres of Liga MX earlier this week while Acosta ended his stay in Dallas after just six months having signed with Fluminense FC in Brazil's top division. As the club has yet to sign direct replacements, head coach Eric Quill will need to rely on existing pieces to fill the void. For Farfan, that likely means Homegrown left backs Nolan Norris and Josh Torquato while wingers Don Deedson, Pedrinho and Bernard Kamungo could be relied upon to replace Acosta in the lineup.

Crunch Time: With just 10 games remaining in the regular season, time is running thin for FC Dallas to reverse fortunes and climb above the playoff line. Dallas currently resides in 12th place on 25 points, five points below Colorado in 9th (the final spot for the play-in game) and eight points behind Austin FC in 7th (the last spot for the playoffs proper). To have a chance at the play-in game, the Burn will likely need to reach at least 40 points and would require the club to average 1.5 points per game (or better) over the final 10 matches. Considering the club is currently averaging 1.04 PPG, a play-in berth would require an immediate improvement beginning with a home win against fifth-place Portland Timbers Saturday night.

Portland: The Timbers arrive in Dallas on short rest having played three Leagues Cup matches over the last 10 days, including a Wednesday draw with Club América most recently. Despite finishing on seven points (two wins and a draw) in the group stage, Portland did not advance to the Leagues Cup quarterfinals and will shift all their focus back to the MLS regular season. The Timbers have enjoyed a strong league campaign so far and sit in fifth place in the West with a 10-7-7 record, including a strong 4-5-2 road record. Still, one major stat boads well for Dallas: The Timbers have won just once at Toyota Stadium in 16 regular season games, with that one win coming back in 2014.
