Open Cup Overview

In case you're new around here, here's a brief overview of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

First played in 1914, the Open Cup is the U.S.'s oldest ongoing national soccer tournament and it's open to any professional or amateur team affiliated with U.S. Soccer. Basically, a team from any league in the country can compete (separate to its respective league play) in hopes of making it all the way through the single-game-knockout competition to reach the final. In all, the Open Cup features eight rounds (First Round, Second Round, Third Round, Round of 32, Round of 16, etc).

This year, 16 of MLS's 30 teams entered the Open Cup at the Round of 32 stage: FC Dallas, Austin FC, Charlotte FC, Chicago Fire FC, D.C. United, Houston Dynamo FC, Minnesota United FC, Nashville SC, New England Revolution, New York City FC, New York Red Bulls, Orlando City SC, Philadelphia Union, Portland Timbers, San Jose Earthquakes and St. Louis City SC.

FC Dallas advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating USL League One side AV Alta FC 3-1 thanks to goals from Lucho Acosta, Kaick and Bernard Kamungo. Next, they face the Red Bulls with a chance to reach the Open Cup quarterfinals.

FC Dallas in the Open Cup

FC Dallas is one of the most successful MLS teams in U.S. Open Cup history having won the tournament twice (1997 and 2016) and twice finished as runners-up (2005 and 2007). In 1999, the tournament was renamed in honor of Lamar Hunt for his immense contributions to growing soccer in the U.S.

FCD Legend and Club Ambassador Kenny Cooper is the second-top scorer in modern Open Cup history (1995-present) with 13 goals, three behind Sébastien Le Toux's 16.

All-Time Open Cup Record: 39-24-6
All-Time Open Cup Home Record: 24-7-3
All-Time Open Cup Away Record: 15-17-3

Opponent Outlook: New York Red Bulls

Much like FC Dallas, the New York Red Bulls are having an up-and-down season. They sit in 10th place in the Eastern Conference with 18 points from 14 games and a 5-6-3 record. Worryingly for Dallas, 16 of those 18 points have been earned at the Red Bulls' home stadium where Wednesday's game is taking place (also a venue where FC Dallas has never won in eight attempts). Form wise, they're coming off back-to-back losses in the league and three losses in their last four (although their one win was a 7-0 trouncing of the LA Galaxy). The Red Bulls reached the Open Cup Round of 16 with a 4-1 win over the Colorado Springs Switchbacks of the USL Championship.
