STORY LINES

  • Return the Favor: For the first time in 2023, FC Dallas faces a repeat opponent as the club heads to Saint Paul to take on Minnesota United. It's a rematch of the season-opener that saw Minnesota spoil the party with a gritty 1-0 win, Dallas' first home-opener loss since 2009. Now, FC Dallas will look to return the favor at Allianz Field where the Loons are winless so far this season (0-1-2). It would be reminiscent of the 2022 regular season when Minnesota toppled Dallas 2-1 in Frisco before FCD earned a 3-0 in Saint Paul. Including last October's playoff match, Sunday's game is the fifth time the clubs will face off in less than 12 months.
  • Impact Subs: Head coach Nico Estévez has made good use of his substitutions in recent weeks. Against Real Salt Lake two weeks ago, Estévez introduced Bernard Kamungo for the first time this season only for the 21-year-old to score a late winner. And, last time out, it was Tsiki Ntsabeleng who entered the game to create Dallas' only goal against NYCFC with a pinpoint cross to the head of José Martínez. Impact subs could again play a key role in Minnesota, especially with the possible return of Alan Velasco who missed the last two games with a knee injury. Even if Velasco makes the trip, it's unlikely he'd play 90 minutes but could provide a spark from the bench—like Kamungo and Ntsabeleng before him.
  • The Loons: It's been an odd season for Minnesota United, at least looking at it from the outside. First off, their talismanic Designated Player Emanuel Reynoso didn't report for preseason for personal reasons and is still absent from the team. But that didn't hamper the Loons' start. They ended Dallas' home opener streak before racking up two more wins and two ties to begin the year unbeaten. But they've lost three straight since then and, curiously, haven't won at home yet. Perhaps the absence of Reynoso's creativity — often crucial for unlocking a visiting opponent — is beginning to catch up with them. Regardless, Dallas will need to shake off the loss in New York to rebound with another win Minnesota.
