Story Lines

The Playoff Picture: Despite earning a point on the road in Portland last week, FC Dallas dropped a place in the standings because of other results around the league. Dallas fell from 9th to 10th meaning they're now below the playoff line with three games remaining in the regular season. The good news is FCD has a game in hand on both teams above it, the San Jose Earthquakes and the Colorado Rapids, who occupy the two play-in game spots that FCD is chasing. But that game in hand only counts if FC Dallas can earn all three points in each of their remaining three games - depending on what San Jose and Colorado do, of course. If Dallas were to win out, it would guarantee at least an 8th-place finish and therefore home field advantage in the single-elimination play-in game. Their first chance to capitalize is this Saturday afternoon against the already-eliminated LA Galaxy.

Back-to-Back: Saturday's match will be the first meeting between FC Dallas and LA Galaxy in 2025 due to a scheduling quirk. The clubs were originally slated to face off on Aug. 30 but the match was pushed thanks to the Galaxy's deep run in the Leagues Cup in the summer. That match was rescheduled for Oct. 11 meaning Dallas and LA will end up playing one another in back-to-back weeks, a rare occurence in MLS. And because of the current playoff picture (explained above), FC Dallas' performance against the LA Galaxy will go a long way to determining the fate of its 2025 season. If recent history is any indication, FCD has a solid chance of turning these two games into six points considering it has won five of the last six games against the Galaxy going back to 2022.

The Galaxy: To say the LA Galaxy have provided a disappointing title defense would be an understatement. After winning their league-leading sixth MLS Cup last year, LA have struggled mightily in 2025 and sit bottom of the Western Conference with just five wins over the campaign. To give the Galaxy some credit, they have improved significantly over the second half of the season having gone winless over their first 16 games while also securing an impressive third-place finish in the Leagues Cup. Still, the Galaxy visit Toyota Stadium without a road win in MLS this year and will also be on short rest having face Toluca FC Wednesday in the Campeones Cup (the annual meeting between last year's winners of MLS and Liga MX).
