STORY LINES

Must Win
Okay, it's barely July so maybe FCD vs. Miami isn't a true "must-win" game but it's definitely a "would-be-really-nice-to-win" game for Dallas. The club has hit its first slump under coach Nico Estévez with one win in its last six, although FCD is still fourth in the West thanks to its strong start to the 2022 campaign. So, a win at home on Independence Day would do a lot for the team's morale, especially with two derby games on the horizon. But Dallas will have to work for it. Miami is just below the playoff line in the East but Phil Neville's men have won three of their last four, scoring two goals in each of those wins. Dallas' defensive record has taken a bit of a hit over the last month and they'll need to get back on track to earn its first shutout since May 8.

Dynamic Duo
Dallas and USMNT forwards Jesús Ferreira and Paul Arriola are both in the midst of the most prolific seasons of their careers. Ferreira became the first player to reach double digit goals this season with his 10th strike of the campaign midweek in Los Angeles. With four assists also to his name, the FCD Homegrown leads MLS in goal contributions with 14 (10 goals, four assists). Arriola has been playing lights out since his offseason move from DC United. The 27-year-old has eight goals and two assists to his name and - having not taken a penalty this year - is second to Ferreira for non-penalty goals in the league. If the pair can continue their hot streaks, Dallas has a good chance of taking three points against a Miami team that's conceded 25 goals in 16 games.

The 2022 Paxton Pomykal Experience
Midfielder Paxton Pomykal is quieting enjoying an outstanding individual campaign. The 22-year-old Homegrown has started all 17 games for FCD this year and leads MLS central midfielders in myriad of categories:

  1. passes completed (485, 92 more than any other CM)
  2. passes under pressure (336, 83 more than any other CM)
  3. progressive passes (251, 37 more than any other CM)
  4. touches (634, 99 more than any other CM)
  5. pressured touches (348, 79 more than any other CM)
  6. pressures (519, 106 more than any other CM)
  7. tackles won (29, 11 more than any other CM)
  8. successful interceptions (40, 6 more than any other CM)
  9. interceptions that led to a shot (25, 6 more than any other CM)

Pomykal's all-around game has been a huge part of FCD's success over the first half of the year but the Lewisville native will want to start adding more goals and assists to his name. Regardless, he's an indispensable part of Dallas' midfield and he'll likely be pulling the strings once again this Monday.
