Story Lines

Derby Day: Although it's only May, FC Dallas are readying themselves to play Texas Derby rival Houston Dynamo for the second and final time in the 2025 regular season. The clubs kicked off the season against one another back in February, with FC Dallas earning a 2-1 comeback victory courtesy of goals from Petar Musa and Anderson Julio. Thanks to that result, Dallas holds the advantage in the Derby and will win the series over Houston with either a win or a draw on Saturday. The only avenue for the Dynamo to win back El Capitán, the 18th-century replica cannon that serves as a trophy for the Texas Derby series, is to defeat Dallas by two goals or more. If they win by one goal, the series would be tied and, as the current holders, Dallas would keep El Capitán next season unless the clubs were to meet in the U.S. Open Cup or MLS Cup playoffs to break the tie. Regardless, FCD will look to avoid any of those scenarios by winning (or at least drawing) on Saturday to confirm their fourth-straight Texas Derby series victory.

Mr. Anderson Julio: Forward Anderson Julio is enjoying a productive first season in Dallas. The Ecuadorian has contributed three goals and an assist in his first nine games since joining FCD from Real Salt Lake in the offseason, making him one of the first names on head coach Eric Quill's team sheet. Julio scored his team-leading third goal last week with a fantastic solo run against former club RSL and also proved to be the difference the last time Dallas faced off against Houston, notching the game-winning goal in the 76th minute. Assuming the 28-year-old keeps his starting place, he'll look to cause Houston more trouble with his speed and trickery across Dallas' frontline.

Houston: It's been tough sledding for the Dynamo through the first third of the 2025 regular season. The club sits in 12th place on 13 points from 13 games, three points behind Dallas who have a game in hand. The Dynamo began the week on a two-game losing streak but bucked the trend with a comfortable 2-0 home win over third-place Minnesota United Wednesday night. Worryingly for Dallas, Houston has strengthened since the last time the teams met with the addition of attacking midfielder Ondrej Lingr as a Designated Player. The 26-year-old Czech international has been lining up at left wing for Ben Olsen's side and contributed two goals in his first five games. If Houston are to earn their first win at Toyota Stadium since 2011, Lingr will likely need to make his mark on his first Texas Derby.
