Story Lines

Reset: With the Leagues Cup midseason tournament in the rearview mirror, FC Dallas resumes its playoff push against Eastern Conference opponent D.C. United this Saturday. It's been a full 25 days since FCD last played a competitive game (a loss against FC Juarez in the Leagues Cup) and 34 days since the club last competed in MLS (a dramatic 1-1 draw with the New England Revolution on the road). The time off essentially served as a mini preseason camp and the team is ready to hit the ground running with nine games remaining in the regular season. As of now, Dallas is seven points out of the automatic playoff spots and three points behind the play-in game. Considering interim head coach Peter Luccin helped the club earn 10 points from its last five league games prior to the break, there's a good chance FCD can keep battling and earn a third-consecutive trip to the postseason. It all starts this Saturday at 6:30PM in our nation's capital.

Squad Health: FC Dallas' gameday roster will look a little different than it did last time out. In the three-and-a-half weeks since the team last played, four players have returned from injury: Jesús Ferreira, Alan Velasco, Asier Illarramendi and Patrickson Delgado. Those are some important names. There's also two new signings to consider. Manuel "Show" Cafumana joined on a year-long loan from the Israeli Premier League while FCD traded CF Montréal for veteran right back Ruan (pronounced hoo-ahn). With a larger, healthy squad, Peter Luccin will have far more options to work with than he did prior to the Leagues Cup break.

D.C. United: Saturday's opponent is fellow MLS original D.C. United. The club sits in 13th place in the East with 26 points from 25 matches (6-11-8). There was some buzz around D.C. early in the season when the team recorded just one loss in its first seven games under new head coach Troy Lesesne. Progress slowed after that, though, and D.C. found themselves in the midst of an 11-game winless run before notching back-to-back Ws before entering the Leagues Cup (where they progressed from the Group Stage and were knocked out in the Round of 32). If D.C. can tighten things up defensively (they've conceded a conference-high 50 goals), they'll prove a difficult opponent for FC Dallas.
