STORY LINES

  • Playoff Picture: Yep, it's that time of the season. It's time to start glancing over at the MLS standings and taking note of where your club resides in terms of the playoff race. For FC Dallas (and most teams in the Western Conference), it's crunch time. Dallas is in 9th place - the final playoff spot - with nine games remaining. The might sound a little bleaker than it is, though. FCD has played one fewer game than most of the teams ahead of them and the West is very, very tight this year. Two wins and Dallas could be back up to 4th, if one or two other results go their way. Plus, FCD is a strong home team and 5 of the final 9 games are at Toyota Stadium; beginning with Dallas' matchup against Atlanta United this Saturday.
  • Velasco vs. Almada: Saturday's match will feature an intriguing game within the game. There'll be an Argentine arms race as Dallas' Alan Velasco and Atlanta's Thiago Almada go head-to-head to see who can have more creative influence on proceedings. Regardless of who wins, the pair will be playing on the same side soon after as both Velasco and Almada will join up with the Argentina national team following the game. For Velasco, it'll be the first time he trains with the senior national team, before he joins up with the U-23 team coached by Javier Mascherano. Almada, on the hand, has been with the senior team and helped them lift the World Cup late last year. Regardless, Saturday is an excellent opportunity for both players to enjoy a positive send-off.
  • Ferreira's Availability: Everyone knows how important Jesús Ferreira is to FC Dallas. He's been the club's leading scorer the last two seasons, is a two-time MLS All-Star, and has been forging an impressive career with the USMNT on the side. Wouldn't it be nice if Ferreira was playing for FCD in MLS? Get this, the last time Ferreira played an MLS game for FC Dallas was June 11. WE ARE IN SEPTEMBER. Between international duty, the All-Star break, the Leagues Cup break and most recently an illness, it's been 82 days since Ferreira played an MLS game. But that might all be about to change. Ferreira, who recovered from COVID late last week per head coach Nico Estévez, has been training with the team this week and could be fit enough to make the game day squad. If so, Dallas' front line options immediately look better and the team has a much better chance of taking all three points Saturday night.
