Power Rankings Week 22

FC Dallas had their first weekend off from MLS action since the Copa America Centenario break in early June, but were anything but resting as they opened their CONCACAF Champions League slate with a 2-1 win over Real Estelí last Thursday before preparing to take on Los Angeles Galaxy in Wednesday’s Lamar Hunt Open Cup semifinal. Here’s how the team fared in various MLS power rankings:

“The top team in the league (and in these Power Rankings) had the weekend off, and I’m certainly not going to penalize them for that. A 2-1 midweek win over Real Estelí in the CONCACAF Champions League is nice, but losing Fabian Castillo to Trabzonspor in a bizarre, protracted transfer saga isn’t.”

“FCD remains atop the Power Rankings despite having the weekend off. It still remains to be seen how the dragged-out departure of Fabian Castillo to Turkish side Trabzonspor will impact the club in the long term.”

“FCD used a rare weekend off to recover from a 2-1 CCL victory over Real Esteli on Thursday. It plays the Galaxy Wednesday in the U.S. Open Cup and hosts SKC Saturday, having won five of its last seven league games. This week will provide some clues as to what will happen in the era post-Fabian Castillo, and what former Timbers centerback Norberto Paparrato, acquired and signed in a trade last week, can provide.”

“Do you trust a forward crop of Maxi Urruti, Tesho Akindele, Colin Bonner and Getterson to lead this team to a trophy? Any trophy? There's so much to love about this Dallas team, but there's plenty of reason to worry about consistent goal-scoring, especially with Fabian Castillo gone.”

“A week off from MLS play was headlined by a narrow CONCACAF Champions League win over Real Estelí. Still, the week feels a bit like a loss for a team that will officially be without Fabian Castillo the rest of the way. FC Dallas remains a favorite, but it will be interesting to see how the team bounces back from the sale of their biggest star.”
