The 2016 MLS Cup Playoffs kicked off last night with matches in Toronto and Los Angeles. FC Dallas will have to wait a few more hours to find out their Western Conference Semifinal opponent as Los Angeles relatively easily defeated Real Salt Lake 3-1 at StubHub Center to advance on where they will face the Colorado Rapids on Sunday.
Here's a rundown of last night's action:
Toronto FC 3, Philadelphia Union 1
TFC relatively easily dispatched Philadelphia in their first-ever playoff match at BMO Field. Sebastian Giovinco gave the home side the lead just 15 minutes into the match on a defensive error from Philadelphia. Early in the second half, Jonathan Osorio doubled the home side's advantage and despite a late fight back from Philadelphia, TFC sealed advancement to the conference semifinals with a 3-1 win.
They'll face NYCFC in the next round in a series that is sure to be full of goals.
LA Galaxy 3, Real Salt Lake 1
Los Angeles shook off recent struggles to record a decisive 3-1 win over Real Salt Lake on Wednesday night securing passage into the conference semifinals. Alan Gordon put the home side ahead early on, though RSL equalized through a Joao Plata penalty kick mid-way through the first half.
The tie wouldn't last long, however, as Emmanuel Boateng scored twice in ten minutes to give LA a 3-1 lead at halftime that they wouldn't relinquish. The Galaxy will face Colorado in the Western Conference semifinals.
