It’s official: Petar Musa is FC Dallas’ new King of Goals.
After 26 seasons, the club’s single-season goal record of 18 – set by Jason Kreis during his 1999 MLS MVP campaign – has finally been bested. Musa found the back of the net for the 19th time this season in Dallas’ 3-2 defeat to Charlotte FC Saturday night. While the record-breaking moment was overshadowed on the night by the disappointing result, it’s his moment that will live longer in the memory.
“It means a lot to me to break a record that lasted such a long amount of time,” Musa said. “I'm really, really glad that I achieved it but I'm looking for more to reach an even bigger number.”
Kreis’ 18 goals proved a barrier for FC Dallas goal scorers for over a quarter century. The bar was equaled three time but had never been raised: Kenny Cooper (2008), Jesús Ferreira (2022) and Musa himself (2025) reached the mark in prior campaigns before the Croatian international finally surpassed it last Saturday. Incidentally, Kreis, Ferreira, Cooper and Musa now make up FC Dallas’ four all-time top goal scorers.
While Kreis and Ferreira are now employed by other MLS clubs (Kreis as President of Soccer Operations for Real Salt Lake and Ferreira as a player for Seattle Sounders), Kenny Cooper remains with FC Dallas as Club Ambassador. It’s only fitting that he was the one to honor Musa and his achievement with a unique gift from the club. After Tuesday’s training session, Cooper presented Musa with a pair of customized cowboy boots bearing his new moniker “King of Goals”, his initials, the FC Dallas crest, and the Croatia and Texas flags.
“He's an elite player, and it's a joy to see him score so many,” Cooper said. “It's great to work alongside him on the training field each day, and I’m just really proud of him. From the first moment he showed up here, you knew he was really special, and now he's made history at this club.
“We’ve had some absolutely amazing goal scorers who have been superstars in this league, so it just shows the quality it takes to score that many goals, and the quality it takes to score more than 18 — which Petar's done. He's an exceptional talent and an exceptional person.”
“I really respect Kenny and his career and what he's done for FC Dallas,” Musa said. “He is a legend of Dallas, and to hear kind and supportive words from him is always great. Every training he helps me and gives me some advice, it's a privilege.
“And they are beautiful boots. Actually, I was thinking of getting boots because I have many (cowboy) hats, so I needed some boots. And now finally I get them and they’re personalized, so that's really nice.”
