Thursday, December 8: Shea stand above left-sided midfielders (SoccerAmerica.com)

In their year-end positional rankings, Soccer America called Brek Shea the best left midfielder in Major League Soccer in 2011. Ridge Mahoney cites Shea’s rise with the USMNT, the attention he garnered from foreign teams, and his slashing runs and service as reasons the young Texan was the best at his position in his fourth year as a professional.

Zach Loyd became the second FC Dallas player to be tabbed as the best at his position in 2011 last week, when Soccer America called the University of North Carolina product the best right back in MLS. Ridge Mahoney bestowed the honor on Loyd based on his instincts, tackling, and wise decision-making when it comes to getting forward vs. playing it safe.

Center back George John recently returned home to the Pacific Northwest to be honored by his former high school. Last Thursday, Shorewood High School retired John’s number 11 jersey at a halftime ceremony of a home basketball game.
