2025-match-recap

Following a promising win over St. Louis City SC, FC Dallas returned home looking to build momentum and climb out of the bottom of the Western Conference standings. NYCFC entered the match aiming to rebound after a frustrating draw against Sporting Kansas City and continue pushing toward a strong playoff position.

FC Dallas started the match in a 4-2-3-1 formation and came out in a high, aggressive press, generating a pair of early chances from NYCFC build-out mistakes. However, it was NYCFC who struck first with midfielder Jonathan Shore scoring near-post on a corner in the 11th minute to give New York the lead. It was a disappointing moment for Dallas, especially considering their clear physical advantage.

Dallas responded well by sticking to their strengths and playing direct. Led by striker Petar Musa, the attack was dynamic and high-paced. In possession, the attacking and outside midfielders would move in line with Musa and interchange dynamically, allowing Dallas to create chaos in New York’s back line. That energy quickly paid off with two goals in under five minutes—first from Musa and then from Logan Farrington, who delivered a breakout performance.

NYCFC played more directly than usual, frequently targeting Alonso Martínez. Although Dallas had started in a compact 4-2-3-1 to limit entry passes from the midfield, NYCFC's approach often bypassed the midfield or exploited gaps in Dallas’ defense. Martinez’s pace and footwork consistently beat both Dallas center backs, leading to a goal in the 21st minute. Farrington gave FC Dallas the lead just before halftime, scoring his second goal after a well-worked sequence from out wide to make it 3-2.

At halftime, NYCFC held 64% of the possession to Dallas’ 36%, which combined with Dallas’ high press appeared to wear on the FC Dallas players. The second half slowed in tempo, with both teams attacking through wide overloads and inside to outside diagonal runs. However, now in the lead, Dallas drifted from the direct approach that brought early success and tried to build-out from the back. Their struggles in possession and build-out became apparent and they conceded a couple of dangerous turnovers. In the 83rd minute, New York capitalized on these struggles. After winning the ball, Nicolás Fernández played a beautifully placed through ball to Alonso Martinez who ran freely behind the two center backs, untracked, to score his third goal of the night. Postgame, Head Coach Eric Quill pointed to mental lapses and a lack of taking responsibility such as this moment and the corner kick as the main contributing factors in the loss.

In the end, it was a clinical road performance from NYCFC and a frustrating night for FC Dallas, who struggled to build on the momentum of last week’s win.
