PORTLAND, Ore. -- FC Dallas drew Swedish first division opponent AIK, 0-0, Sunday at JELD-WEN Field in Portland, Ore.
Next up is tournament host, Timbers FC, in the second of three matches during Portland's second annual preseason tournament. That game is set to kick off at 5:30 p.m. CT on Wednesday, Feb. 20.
The first scoring chance in today's match came in the fifth minute, when Jackson combined with Blas Perez to earn FC Dallas a free kick in a dangerous position. David Ferreira, wearing the captain's armband, stepped to the kick, which was just outside the area and off to the left side of goal. However, the Colombian's service into the area was thwarted by AIK's wall and the ball was headed back into FC Dallas territory, relieving the pressure.
Jackson combined with Zach Loyd to create a second opportunity in the exact same location near the 14th minute but just as in the fifth minute, Ferreira's service was ushered away by a timely AIK header.
Fabian Castillo led a counter-attack and found a streaking Ferreira in the 16th minute, as FC Dallas continued to dominate possession. Unfortunately for Dallas, AIK goalkeeper Ivan Turina was there to make his first save of the match, taking the ball off the foot of Blas Perez's first-touch chance to preserve the tie.
AIK had its first solid opportunity of the match in the 26th minute when a through ball into the area stretched FC Dallas' back line. AIK's Viktor Lundberg received the pass but decided to drop the ball into the path of late-arriving Robin Quaison. The AIK midfielder crushed a hard shot to the far post from the top of the area, but one half of FC Dallas' solid center back pairing, Matt Hedges was in perfect position to block the shot attempt with his left foot.
Five minutes later, in the 31st minute, it was Dallas' other center back, George John who recovered to take a breakaway chance off the foot of AIK's Daniel Gustavsson. The midfielder had made a solid run to get into position, and was rewarded by a ball played over the top of FC Dallas' defense, but John managed to make up ground on Gustavsson and smother a cut-back move with a firm tackle.
After the scoreless first half, Kenny Cooper did well to bring down a ball cleared out of the back by second half substitute, goalkeeper Raul Fernandez. Cooper knocked a lateral pass to Ferreira with his first touch. Ferreira turned and led a breakout that ended with a point-blank save by AIK's Turina on Castillo.
At the other end of the pitch, AIK's Nabil Bahoui was issued a yellow card in the 52nd minute and nearly scored in the 54th, sending a blazing shot high towards the right post behind Fernandez. The Peruvian managed to fight off the attempt with a diving save to his left side.
FC Dallas returned fire in the 66th minute with another quick counter-attack. This time, Jackson hooked a ball into the feet of Cooper, who was standing at the penalty mark. Copper brought the ball down and spun his defender, but the ensuing shot attempt was blocked by an AIK defender.
AIK's Kennedy Igboananike beat FC Dallas' offsides trap and was in alone against Fernandez in the 76th minute but FC Dallas' goalkeeper stood tall and made a quality save on the striker to once again, keep the match scoreless.
AIK had one last chance go wanting in the 87th minute when Igboananike played a long give-and-go with a teammate down the right flank. The return pass to Igboananike found the striker in space but once again Fernandez stymied AIK's attack by pushing the well-struck ball wide of the post with a diving save.
