What's at stake? FC Dallas (0-0-2), who will be playing their first road game of the season, are looking to earn their first win and escape the bottom of the Western Conference. Momentum is very much at stake for the Red Bulls (2-1-0), who started the season brightly with wins over two MLS Cup contenders in Chicago and Seattle, but then dropped a 2-0 loss to Chivas USA last Saturday. FC Dallas fell to the Red Bulls, led by then-interim coach Richie Williams, 3-2 in late August at Giants Stadium. Forward Juan Pablo Ángel exploited the Dallas defense with two goals to give New York its first win in more than three months of league play. Who could forget Clint Mathis burning the then-Dallas Burn for five goals in one game on Aug. 26, 2000? That remarkable tally remains an MLS record that FC Dallas would like to forget. New York went on to sweep Dallas in the postseason that year. The following season, Mathis ran the ball 50 yards through the FC Dallas defense before slotting it home for that year's MLS Goal of the Year. FCD fans are no doubt grateful they no longer have to see the name Mathis on the back of a Red Bulls jersey. Daniel Hernandez vs. Joel Lindpere: Hernandez has added some real bite to the FC Dallas midfield and plays with tenacity, which should create an intriguing match-up against the deft Lindpere in central midfield. Coming off his worst game of his young MLS career, Lindpere could come out firing, meaning that Hernandez will have to be on his toes for a full 90 minutes. This is one of the most even series in the league, with 11 of the last 14 games either ending a tie or decided by a single goal. “We talked about it and that’s the question, how do we respond? We didn’t look good on Saturday. We played two very good matches to start the season and then we didn’t perform well on Saturday in LA. We need to do better than that” – New York Red Bulls head coach Hans Backe.
