FRISCO - The FC Dallas U-16s opened Generation adidas Cup in emphatic fashion on Sunday evening at the Toyota Soccer Center defeating La Liga side Athletic Bilbao 3-0.
Giovanni Montesdeoca opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a right-footed effort curled past the goalkeeper to give FCD a deserved lead. In the second half, right back Reggie Cannon came up to score a brilliant individual effort in the 51st minute and FCD rounded out the scoring with Toshiki Yasuda, Benjamin Granillo and Montesdeoca combining to give the forward his second goal of the match in the 64th minute to seal the points for FC Dallas.
FCD bossed the match from start to finish earning a 3-0 win that sets them up well for the rest of the week. They will play RSL on Monday afternoon before rounding out the group against Pumas from Liga MX on Wednesday at the Toyota Soccer Center.
"I felt like we created some good opportunities in the first half we didn't put away and had we done it earlier we could have focused on keeping the ball better," said head coach Luchi Gonzalez. "But I liked in the second half that we imposed and had a little more conviction in the attacking third and put away our chances. We were able to calm the game down after that."
