FC Dallas Trades Michael Barrios to Colorado Rapids

FC Dallas to receive Rapids’ international roster spot, swap MLS SuperDraft pick

FRISCO, Texas (January 13, 2021) – FC Dallas has traded winger Michael Barrios to the Colorado Rapids in exchange for an international roster spot, the club announced today. The clubs have also swapped 2021 MLS SuperDraft first round picks. FC Dallas now holds the No. 15 pick, while the Rapids hold the No. 21 pick.

Additionally, FC Dallas will receive additional incentives if Barrios meets certain performance metrics while with the Rapids.

“Michael Barrios has been an amazing player for us and we’re thankful for his contributions to the organization both on and off the field,” said FC Dallas President Dan Hunt. “He brought so much joy to our fans. We wish him the best in his next chapter.”

Barrios, 29, signed with FC Dallas on Feb. 20, 2015, appearing in 211 appearances across all competitions and recorded 37 goals and 48 assists. He made his MLS debut in the 75th minute of FC Dallas’ 2015 season opener against San Jose on March 7 and scored his first goal in the 3-0 win against New England Revolution of July 4, 2015.

Barrios departs FC Dallas with 31 goals and 44 assists during the regular season and ranking fifth in franchise history with 179 regular season appearances. Following the 2019 season, Barrios tied the FC Dallas single-season record set in 1999 by Jason Kreis with a career-high of 15 assists. He also became one of three players in franchise history to record 30 goals and 30 assists, joining Jason Kreis (91 G, 65A) and Fabían Castillo (34G, 30A) after he scored his 30th goal on October 6, 2019 vs. Sporting Kansas City.

In 2018, Barrios became the seventh FC Dallas player to score a hat trick, after scoring three goals on July 28, 2018 against Sporting Kansas City at Children’s Mercy Park. FC Dallas had a 35-8-9 in regular season league games where Barrios scored or assisted and a 19-3-3 where he only scored. Barrios also holds the second longest uninterrupted appearance streak by an outfield player (and the fifth-longest overall in MLS history) after playing in 96 consecutive league appearances from June 19, 2016 through May 4, 2019.

The Barranquilla native was named MLS Player of the Week for Week 4 in 2016 after scoring two goals in the dominating 3-0 shutout win over D.C. United in RFK Stadium on March 26. In 2017, Barrios was named FC Dallas Team MVP. He was also part of the team that won both the 2016 MLS Supporters’ Shield and the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.

Prior to joining FC Dallas, Barrios spent four seasons with Uniautónoma. He made 136 appearances totaling 10,091 minutes for the first division side and scored 35 goals.
