The four pots for the 2016 Copa America Centenario, which will be held outside South America and in the U.S. for the first time ever, was announced today by the tournaments organizing committee.
One team will be picked from each pot and placed into one of four groups for the 100 year-old tournament during Sunday's draw which will be held in New York City.
Pot 1 features United States, Brazil, Mexico and Argentina. These four teams have also been pre-seeded from Group A to D, respectively. This pot contains the top seeds, given to the host and the most decorated teams from their respective federations. The United States will play in the opener at Santa Clara, California.
The second pot which includes Chile, Colombia, Ecuador and Uruguay represents the top four remaining CONMEBOL teams according to December's FIFA rankings. Pot 3 is home to the non-seeded CONCACAF squads: Costa Rica, Haiti, Jamaica and Panama. While the fourth and last pot is made up of Bolivia, Paraguay, Peru and Venezuela, the bottom four CONMEBOL teams, based on FIFA's rankings.
The 16-nation tournament will be played at 10 venues in the U.S. from June 3-26 and will feature three matches played in Texas, with Houston Texans' NRG Field hosting both a Group A and Group C match, and one of the tournament's semifinals.
