FRISCO, Texas – We are less than a week away from the 2020 MLS SuperDraft. FCD has the 14th and 17th pick of the draft and it will be the third year in a row that Dallas will have two selections in the first round.


Here is look at the five best picks in MLS SuperDraft history selected at pick 17.

5. Martin Machon - Miami Fusion

Machon is a unique entrance on the list, as he made most of his appearances before he was drafted. Machon was a part of the 1997-1998 LA Galaxy teams, which both made the MLS Playoffs. After a year outside the league, Machon was drafted in 2000 by Miami. It ended up being his last year in the league, but Machon contributed 16 assists in 24 appearances.

4. Taylor Kemp - D.C. United

Kemp spent his entire five-year MLS career with D.C. United after being drafted in the 2013 draft. Kemp became a mainstay of the D.C. United defense in 2015, making 27 appearances that year. He went on to make 52 appearances in the next two years before injuries derailed his career. He ended his career with 101 appearances in MLS, all for D.C.

3. Will Hesmer - Kansas City Wizards

It took Hesmer a few years to become a starter in MLS, eventually earning the starting spot between the posts for Columbus in 2007. He made 130 of his 133 appearances between 2007 and 2011, with his best season coming in 2018, where he was a finalist for MLS Goalkeeper of the Year in a season where he helped the Crew earn the Supporters' Shield and MLS Cup.

2. Greg Vanney - LA Galaxy

Drafted with the number 17 pick in the first ever SuperDraft, Vanney is now an institution in MLS. Vanney’s first spell in MLS was as a defender, a key part of the Galaxy team that went to three MLS Cup Finals. He returned to MLS for FC Dallas in 2005 and won his second and third all-star appearances. Vanney ended up making 270 MLS appearances before retiring and now is the head coach of Toronto FC.

1. Josmer “Jozy” Altidore - 2006 (MET)

Altidore was drafted at the tender age of 16 in the 2006 SuperDraft, and went on to have an incredibly impactful career, both in MLS and for the USMNT. Altidore scored 15 goals in 35 games for the Red Bulls before heading to Europe for seven years. He returned to MLS with Toronto FC and was a key part of their MLS Cup victory in 2017. Altidore is also the third highest scorer is USMNT history with 42 goals.
