Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup - Oldest Soccer Tournament in the United States
The Lamar Hunt US Open Cup is the US’s oldest ongoing national soccer tournament. Run by US Soccer, teams from MLS, USL Championship, USL League One, NISA, as well as other amateur teams/divisions compete in this competition. US Soccer unanimously decided to rebrand the competition in honor of our founder, Lamar Hunt, for his contributions to US Soccer. Lamar Hunt is regarded as one of the greatest patrons for the growth and development of professional American soccer.
FC Dallas won the U.S. Open Cup in 1997 and 2016 and were runner ups in 2005 and 2007.
Tributes to the U.S. Open Cup tournament are found throughout Toyota Stadium with the Champions Cup being displayed in the Gallagher Club, the Red Star Club being a tribute to all the tournament winners throughout history, the banners displayed for the two tournament wins, and much more. Be sure to check them out on your next visit to Toyota Stadium.
Competition Format and Significance
The tournament is a single elimination, knockout round, format. In 2025, 96 teams across nine divisions of soccer are participating. FC Dallas (and 15 other MLS teams) will enter next week in the Round of 32. A winner must be determined in each match, even if penalty kicks are needed after 120 minutes of play. If FC Dallas wins next week and the Colorado Switchbacks beat New York Red Bull, FC Dallas will host the Round of 16 vs. Colorado on May 20 or 21. If FC Dallas wins, and NYRB beats Colorado, we will travel to New York for the Round of 16 match.
Teams advancing to the Quarterfinals will be paired up against each other by US Soccer after the matches on May 20-21. The quarterfinal matches will be played on July 8-9. The semifinals will be played on September 16-17. The final will be played on October 1.
The winner of the 2025 Lamar Hunt US Open Cup tournament is guaranteed a spot in the 2026 Champions Cup tournament.
Your Membership Benefits for the Tournament
Next week’s Round of 32 match vs. AV Alta FC of USL League One will be at Toyota Stadium on Wednesday, May 7 at 7:00 pm (please note the earlier kick time than a league match). The bonus tickets you already have as part of your Season Membership package will be good for this match, and you will see those loaded into your account. All aspects of this match will function like a normal, regular season match, including a parking pass being in your account and all F&B inclusions/discounts in place.
As a bonus, you will also receive tickets to the Round of 16 and the Round of 8-Quarterfinal matches should FC Dallas host either of those matches. Those tickets will be loaded into your accounts as the matches are finalized. For these matches, complimentary parking and the STM concession discounts would apply. Tickets, which normally have inclusive food and beverage components, would not have those included for these two matches.
In the event of FC Dallas hosting a tournament semifinal or final match, FC Dallas Season Members will be offered their seats at a discount rate before the public. Season Members who use their issued tickets for the earlier rounds (32, 16, and quarterfinal if played at Toyota Stadium) will receive an additional pricing benefit on tickets for the semifinals and finals. If you cannot make these matches, we would ask that you please find someone who can come cheer on the boys. Should we host a semifinal or final, we will provide additional compensatory advantages for those who supported along the way.
Fun Facts
- We were under construction the last time we won the Open Cup Championship in 2016
- Kenny Cooper, FC Dallas alum, is tied for the second most goals scored in the US Open Cup modern era (1995-Present)
- Our Round of 32 opponent is AV Alta FC, who is their inaugural season in USL League 1 and currently sits in 8th place on the season. Their roster contains Carlos Avilez, former FC Dallas Academy player who helped NTSC win their first championship in 2019 under Coach Quill.
Chance to Win a Player Autograph Soccer Ball
Starting Wednesday, April 30, and every day leading up to next Wednesday, May 7th’s first tournament match, we are going to give away a player signed soccer ball. Each day Season Members can enter to win by sending your Membership Services Representative and email with the answer to the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup trivia question for that day (see below). You can only send the answer to a question on that respective day, so sending in all the answers at once would not qualify you for all the drawings. Answers sent by 11:59 pm each day will be added to the drawing the next morning for the ball being given away (players noted below). Each day we will notify the winner of the ball, and the seven winners will receive your signed soccer balls at the match next Wednesday, May 7.
