FRISCO, Texas - FC Dallas fans were greeted with some unwanted news Friday morning. Midfielder Paxton Pomykal will miss roughly six months after undergoing an arthroscopic labrum repair and correction surgery to fix a persistent pain in his hip. Although Pomykal is essentially ruled out for the season, all is not lost.
Pomykal's six-month absence is undoubtedly a blow, but thankfully FC Dallas has a ready-made replacement in attacking midfielder Andrés Ricaurte - who made the match day squad for the first time this week after joining on loan from Independiente Medellín last month.
“He’s a creative player,” Luchi said following Ricaurte's signing. “I think his strength is the last pass, assisting and finding others in space to score. He can do that in different positions – centrally, wide, underneath (the striker) and even in high positions – so I think he’s going to help out depth in the 10 (position), 7 and 11. He’s going to allow us to do some creative things.”
Luchi's Ricaurte description sounds very similar to what Pomykal has brought to the team since breaking into the starting lineup early last season. If Ricaurte can provide that crucial link between midfield and the attack, and be a creative spark in the final third, the loss of Pomkyal might not be as harsh as it seems on the surface.
“Ricaurte is really impressive already, just already over the last few days," Luchi added. "He has that special pass and special vision.”
