Here’s why you should watch FC Dallas vs. Atlanta United from July 4, 2018 on Sunday at 7PM on TXA 21.
This Independence Day matchup from 2018 saw two of MLS’s top teams face off in a dramatic, barnstorming shootout in Frisco. Dallas entered the game level on points with Sporting KC at the top of the West. Oscar Pareja’s men had only lost twice all season and boasted the second-best defensive record in the league. On the other side, Atlanta United had built an impressive attacking outfit that led MLS in wins, goals and points at that stage. With both teams at the peak of their powers, this was a highly anticipated Fourth of July showdown that delivered in every department.
For me, this match should be remembered as “The Tesho Game” because his late sub changed the entire face of the contest—including the result. This was Tesho Akindele’s fifth and final season in Dallas, and while he didn’t see the field as much as he would’ve wanted in 2018, this dramatic cameo appearance defined his season. A former MLS Rookie of the Year, Tesho was a fan favorite in Dallas and his contributions in this game will live long in the memory of the FCD faithful.
THAT Atlanta Team
With the ridiculous, record-breaking season LAFC had last year, it’s easy to forget just how good that Atlanta United team was in 2018. Head coach Tata Martino had built a potent attacking force led by South American stars Josef Martínez and Miguel Almirón. Their combination of speed, trickery and clinical finishing made them a devastating attacking duo—as FCD’s backline saw first-hand that day. Those two would eventually lead Atlanta to its first MLS Cup later that year, making Dallas’ July 4th result all the more impressive.
