FRISCO — USL League One leaders North Texas SC (16-6-5, (+20) 53 points) will head to Kino Sports Complex for a showdown with FC Tucson on Friday, October 4 at 9:30PM CT in the club's final regular season match. The most recent meeting between the teams ended in a 1-1 draw at Toyota Stadium, with Arturo Rodriguez scoring an 79th minute equalizer to cancel out Jordan Jones's first half strike.
North Texas FC head to Tucson in high spirits, having clinched top spot in the playoffs a few weeks ago. The team has have won four of its last five games and have scored multiple goals in its last eight wins. However, North Texas will be aiming to bounce back after a rough 1-0 loss to Forward Madison two weeks ago, with a stoppage time equalizer chalked off for offside. The Texas based team has historically responded very well to road defeats and is unbeaten in three matches after losing on the road.
Tucson go into the game eager to make its mark against the regular season champions and end the year on a high note. While a mid-year streak of four games unbeaten put FC Tucson in control of its own destiny, recent form turned sour on the back of a 5-0 drubbing at the hands of Lansing. Tucson then lost two of the next four to drop out of contention. Over the course of the season, the team has been a tough out at home, only losing three of its 13 home matches.
Players to Watch
As the season comes to an end and playoffs near, North Texas will be looking to the star man to come up trumps in the final game. That star man is none other than Arturo Rodriguez, who has bulldozed through the league this year. Rodriguez has scored or assisted against eight of the nine teams in the league. He also leads the league in assists and has 20 more chances created than any other player. FC Tucson has to stop Rodriguez in order to have a chance at winning, and so far he has been the proverbial unstoppable force.
FC Tucson have struggled to score in recent games, and have been shutout in three of its last five matches. Jordan Jones will need to play well if the Arizona based team are to buck this trend. Jones leads the teams in goals with nine goals, good for fourth place in the race for the golden boot. He also leads his team in shots, shots on target, and is tied for first in assists. Tucson will need its front man to play well to have a chance to end the season on a positive note.
