FRISCO, Texas- FC Dallas youth teams won their 4th game in a row, as the FC Dallas U-17 game followed their older counterparts into the knockout rounds with a 5-1 blowout of the San Diego Surf, 5-1.
For the first time in the playoffs, an FC Dallas team trailed to an early 9th minute own goal. But the U-17 were not fazed and rose to the challenge. Michael Sosa in the 30th minute stepped forward when San Diego conceded a penalty and his Panenka fooled the goalkeeper. Before the score could even be updated, a high press stole the ball back and Diego Maynez, through on goal placed it beyond the goalkeeper, sparking massive celebrations from the entire team.
After taking the lead, FC Dallas turned up the pace. Sosa scored his second in the 38th minute when the goalkeeper spilled a shot right at his feet, allowing him to convert with ease. After the break the U-17s struggled to win the ball back with their high press and were under pressure, but goalkeeper Seth Wilson made a few top class saves. Then in the 74th minute, a ten pass move that started with a goal kick found its way to Collin Smith on the edge of the box who placed a beautiful curler in the top corner against the run of play. FC Dallas added insult to injury in the 89th minute, when substitute Phillip Akern was played in on goal with the game stretched and he placed it beyond the keeper.
When asked about the game, Head Coach Matias Asorey said “San Diego put us under some pressure in the first 20 minutes. Once the game settled down we created numerous scoring chances and score five unanswered goals.”
With this result, both the U-19 and U-17 teams for FC Dallas have reached the knockout stage of their respective tournaments with one game to spare, and the future looks bright for both NTSC and FC Dallas.
