TOURNAMENT WEEK: U-17s Clinch Generation adidas Cup Quarterfinals, U-19s Fall in Super Group Opener to Villarreal

The first day of matches in Tournament Week 2019 saw two FC Dallas Academy teams combine for a 2-0-1 record, with the U-17s taking a pair of wins to open their Generation adidas Cup account, while the U-19s fell in their Dallas Cup opener.

U-17s Take Two Wins, Lead Group A in GA Cup

FRISCO - After a tournament-opening win against the New York Red Bulls U-19s, the FCD U-17s took control of their second match against Club America early and never looked back.

It was North Texas SC's David Rodriguez striking in just the 6th minute from a loose ball at the top of the area, Michael Sosa doubled the lead 10 minutes later off a corner and Dallas never looked back. The 17s cruised to a 3-0 win to take the top spot in Group A after day one.

"It was huge. It changed the game and gave us momentum," head coach Matias Arosey said of taking the game early. "It allowed us to have a cushion and I think the kids believed they could get more. We talked about being focused, not settling for two and going for more, and they did."

The victories, coupled with a pair of wins from West Ham United on the day, sets up a meeting of the two Group A undefeateds on Monday afternoon. Both sides have secured a spot in the Quarterfinals on Tuesday, and with a quick turnaround and the fourth match coming a little more than 48 hours from the opening game, FCD might choose to rest some of its usual starters despite the group title being on the line.

"We want to be first to try and get the best odds going forward in the tournament, but we also want to manage players," Asorey said. "We're going to try and do both and see how it works out."

"That's a really important step to already be in the next round," Rodriguez said after his game-winner. "Tomorrow we're fighting for who's in first place, and of course we're going to get first place."

U-19s Fall to Villarreal in Dallas Cup Opener, 3-1
by Carter Baum

DALLAS - In the opening match of the 40th Dallas Cup, the FC Dallas U-19s twice fell behind in the opening minutes of a half as they dropped a 3-1 opener against Villarreal CF at the Cotton Bowl.

We played against a great team. We started a bit nervous and we made a couple of mistakes leading to the early goal, but then our team improved a lot and we managed to tie the game," head coach Chuy Vera said after the match. "At the start of the second half we made another mistake and allowed another goal."

Jorge Galdón scored each of the half-opening goals for Villarreal and a penalty in the dying minutes sealed it for the Spanish giants, but no goal could match the power of Tanner Tessmann's long-range strike in the opening game.

It's a precarious early position for FCD, as only the three group winners and just one wild card winner from the remaining nine Super Group teams advance to the semifinals. With matches against Queretaro on Monday evening and Red Bull Brasil on Wednesday, Dallas needs all six points and other results to fall in their favor to keep their hopes of advancing alive.

"Our boys played with intensity and played a good game," Vera added. "I trust that the next game we have a better result."
