Five Things to Know About New FC Dallas Forward Zdenek Ondrasek

FRISCO - FC Dallas has signed its first player of the offseason, forward Zdeněk Ondrášek from Polish first-division side Wisła Kraków. Here’s what you need to know about the new striker in Frisco.

THE COBRA

Ondrášek has a very distinguishable nickname stemming from a very distinguishable tattoo spanning the width of his shoulder blades on his back. You can simply call him The Cobra.

We’ll have to wait and get the full story when he arrives for preseason, but it’s obvious that he’s got a lot of character and he wears it on his sleeve.. and back. That’s the kind of personality that fans adore and opponents hate.

PEAK FORM

After missing nearly the entire 2017-18 season with an Achilles injury, Ondrášek has rebounded at an incredible rate for the 2018-19 campaign. In 19 games this season, the forward has found the net 11 times and is one off the league’s leader in goals at nearly the halfway point of the Polish season. He scored both goals in a 2-1 win over Wisła Płock just last Friday.

WORK RATE

Ondrášek has proven an ability to score goals, yes, but he’s also a leader on the field with a team-first mentality. With the ball, he’s physical and fast, as well as a big threat in the aerial game. At 6-foot-1 and 174 lbs, it’s tough for defenders to move him and is strong in challenges.

Defensively, he’s active in fighting to win the ball back and chasing in recovery. In this sense, he’s similar to a Maxi Urruti-like work rate off the ball while staying more true to his position on the field as a target forward and with a larger physical presence.

CONSISTENCY

Aside from scoring goals and his ability off the ball, one thing the FC Dallas staff liked most about Ondrášek is the consistency in which he plays. Over the course of the games watched, the forward played with the same level and same intensity in every single one. There was not an off game or one where his attitude or organization on the field dropped. When you count on The Cobra, you know what you’re going to get game in and game out.

LOYALTY

In a pro career dating back to 2008, Ondrášek has only signed with three clubs and has spent at least four seasons at each along the way. The Cobra spent four seasons with his first club, České Budějovice, before five seasons with Tromsø IL in Norway’s first division and the last four seasons with Wisła Kraków.
