FRISCO - There was a positive sight to see as FC Dallas continued off-week training for the second time in the young season - Kellyn Acosta and Jesse Gonzalez were both back training after missing the start of the MLS campaign with injuries.
“It’s very exciting,” Acosta said of being back in the field after weeks of off-field recovery and rehab. “It sucks being inside all the time, I basically didn’t see the guys at all because I was here early and I was in and out. It’s good to see faces again and get back to training and getting back step by step.”
“It’s feels great to be back on the field,” Gonzalez said after missing time the last four weeks since FCD’s CCL exit. “I have a lot to improve on, it’s been awhile since I’ve been on the field. I just have to keep working to show the coaches I can be out there again.”
For both, it was important to take the time to get things right early in the season.
Acosta has had lingering issues off and on since the middle of 2017, starting just two of Dallas’ last six games.
“I think this was a step in the right direction.” the Homegrown said. “Obviously I’m going through the tough part of it breaking into the team and getting incorporated again. With surgery you get scar tissue so breaking that up is not the best of things, but I’m glad I got this done and hopefully I have no problems in the future.”
For Gonzalez, it was a decision with he and the staff to get things right after struggling with knee pain throughout preseason and the club’s two CCL matches. Now, he’s focused on getting back to normal for the rest of the year.
“It was important,” he said of the time to recover. “Discussing it with the coaches, I think it was the right thing to do because when I was out there training I was training with pain and it wasn’t normal. Now I feel great, better than before and hopefully the knee doesn’t start getting swollen again.”
Depending on how the next 10 days go, both could possibly be available for FCD’s next match against Colorado on April.
