MATCH RECAP: FC Dallas Opens CONCACAF Champions’ League with 1-0 Loss to Tauro FC

FCD returns to Toyota Stadium next Wednesday, Feb. 28, needing come-from-behind victory to advance

PANAMA CITY, Panama – FC Dallas dropped a 1-0 decision to CONCACAF Champions’ League opponent Tauro FC of Panama tonight at Estadio Rommel Fernández in Panama City.

Now down 1-0 in the home-and-away series, FC Dallas needs a result against Tauro FC next Wednesday (7PM) at Toyota Stadium.

Making his CONCACAF Champions’ League debut, FC Dallas right back Reggie Cannon nearly put his side up 1-0 in the 22nd minute. Cannon’s long run down the right flank was rewarded after strong build-up play from Mauro Diaz and Michael Barrios resulted in a chance for the 19-year-old near Tauro FC’s end line. The former FC Dallas Academy player attempted to find Urruti for a first-touch finish inside the six-yard box, but defender Gustavo Charra stepped in to deflect the pass. The loose ball caromed off the back post and Barrios had a bite at finishing off the play at the back post, but his attempt skipped wide.

Just before the half, Santiago Mosquera brought down a lobbed pass at the top left corner of the area. Dallas’ newest attacking weapon tried to curl a shot over the Tauro FC goalkeeper but the 37-year-old jumped to his left to deflect the shot over the bar with his right hand.

Two minutes later, Barrios stretched the defense before dropping a pass back to Diaz at the top of the area. Diaz faked a shot before finding Urruti at the back post but the striker could not beat McFarland, who made an excellent, diving save to his right side.

Tauro FC took a 1-0 lead on a corner kick just after halftime. Edwin Aguilar stepped in front of his man at the near post to head a shot low, under the left hand of FC Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez. Tauro FC forward Jose Tamburelli beat his marker to the goal line to tap the ball over the line.

Tauro FC played stout defense for the remainder of the match, holding FC Dallas without a clear scoring chance for the final 43 minutes.
