FRISCO - FC Dallas couldn’t get much to go their way on Sunday night in Seattle, but they got some help from around the league to still head into the final week of the regular season within reach of the postseason.
Most relevantly among the Western Conference results, Real Salt Lake dropped a 1-0 decision in Colorado, while the San Jose Earthquakes battled back for a 1-1 draw against conference-leading Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The point puts the Quakes in a tie with FCD on points, but with two more wins to their name, SJ holds the sixth and final playoff spot heading into Decision Day 2017, presented by AT&T.
For FC Dallas to Clinch
To even be in the conversation for that final playoff spot, Dallas needs a result at home against the LA Galaxy on Sunday. Aside from that, they will also need a little bit of help from the San Jose-Minnesota matchup.
Here are the two ways FCD can earn a fourth straight playoff berth:
- A Dallas win over LA AND a San Jose draw or loss to Minnesota
- A Dallas draw with LA AND a San Jose loss to Minnesota AND a Real Salt Lake draw or loss vs. Sporting KC
A win by the Quakes at home over the Loons and FC Dallas cannot clinch regardless of their match against the Galaxy.
For the first time this season, Dallas is not in control of their own playoff destiny, but simply has to focus on what they can control: a win over LA. The rest, we’ll have to wait and see.
Come around 5PM on Sunday evening, we’ll know one way or the other.
What Else is at Stake
Vancouver, Portland, Seattle and Sporting KC all will battle for a top two seed in the West, which would earn a bye past next week’s Knockout Round games. The two that don’t earn a first-round bye will host mid-week, winner-take-all matches for a spot in the Conference Semifinals. Vancouver and Portland will battle it out on Decision Day, while Seattle hosts Colorado and SKC travels to RSL.
Houston, having clinched a playoff berth for the first time in three seasons, can improve their position to Knockout Round hosts with a win over Chicago at home, coupled with a Sporting KC loss OR a SKC draw or Seattle loss, while making up ground in the goal differential tie-breaker.
