Jesse Gonzalez makes four saves to earn his ninth shutout of the season

ORLANDO, Florida – FC Dallas earned its second shutout in a row, as goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez made four key saves to push his team one point closer to a playoff berth today at Orlando City Stadium.

First Half Notes:

4’ – Roland Lamah dribbled past two defenders before slotting the ball inside the area to Carlos Gruezo. The Ecuadorian fired a right-footed shot with his first touch, forcing a diving save from Orlando goalkeeper Joe Bendik that gave FC Dallas its first corner of the match.

9’ – Javi Morlaes set up Mauro Diaz with a short, lobbed cross that was played in to the center of the area. FC Dallas’ No. 10 attempted a diving header from close range but his try bounced up off the pitch and over the crossbar.

29’ – FC Dallas continued to press offensively with left back Maynor Figueroa. The Honduran found Diaz with a sharp pass to the top of the area. Diaz attempted to cut back but earned a foul for FC Dallas in a dangerous area instead, after being tripped up by Orlando defender Servando Carrasco. Diaz took the ensuing kick, bending a shot over the wall but Bendik was in position and made a diving save to his right to keep the game scoreless.

36’ – Orlando’s Giles Barns nearly put the home side ahead in the 36th minute. The Jamaican cracked a hard shot from 25 yards out but FC Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez read it well and caught the line-drive shot in the center of the six-yard box.

Second Half Notes:

48’ – Orlando City got another opportunity just three minutes into the second half, when Dom Dwyer made a sharp run at the back post. Seb Hines tried to pick out his run but Gonzalez came off his line to pluck the pass out of the air and deny Orlando.

53’ – Figueroa and Diaz connected again on FCD’s best chance of the afternoon. The well-placed cross caught the thigh of Diaz and the Argentine tried to poke a shot past Bendik, but the goalkeeper got down to his left side to deflect the shot away before diving on the loose ball.

74’ – Second half substitute Kellyn Acosta had the ball fall to his feet at the top of the area. Playing right back for Hernan Grana, who was forced to come off after suffering an injury, Acosta curled a shot towards the far side-netting but the shot was knocked down by the left arm of Orlando defender, Hines. Acosta appealed for a penalty-kick but referee Armando Villarreal did not point to the spot.

76’ – Gonzalez stopped a header by Hines with a diving save to his right side. The ball was played to the back post by Orlando’s Yoshimar Yotún.

90+4’ – Gonzalez saved a point for FC Dallas with a remarkable save in stoppage-time. Orlando’s Yotún was in perfect position to score after a shot from the top of the box deflected to his feet. Gonzalez charged off his line and got his left calf on a shot that ricocheted off the near post and out for a corner kick.

90+7’ – Yotún forced a second late save out of Gonzalez when he struck a volley hard towards the near post following a corner kick. Gonzalez dove to his right side but lost track of the ball as it whizzed through a crowd of players in front of him. Fortunately for FC Dallas, the ball caught Gonzalez in the face, sending the ball out for another corner kick.
