Dallas and United will play the first regular season game in Atlanta’s new stadium
FC Dallas (9-7-10, 37 points) plays Atlanta United FC (10-8-6, 36 points) on Sunday, September 10 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. This is the first ever meeting between Dallas and the expansion United and the first-ever regular season professional sporting event at the $1.5 billion facility. This game was originally scheduled for Saturday, September 9, 2017.
We Need a W
FC Dallas is winless in its last seven matches (0-4-3) but has posted a draw in two of its last three. The most recent game was significant: FC Dallas played to a 2-2 draw against the New York Red Bulls last Saturday despite being a man down for the final 53 minutes plus stoppage time.
Atlanta is Looking for a W, Too
United is winless in its last four matches. Atlanta is currently sixth in the Eastern Conference and is looking to become the first expansion team to make the MLS Cup Playoffs since 2009.
Homecoming for Zimmerman
Sunday’s match is a homecoming of sorts for FC Dallas defender Walker Zimmerman. The 24-year old grew up in Lawrenceville, GA which is about 30 miles away from Atlanta. He has more than 40 friends and family who will be in attendance for the game.
FC Dallas has been playing shorthanded for most of the summer. Sunday’s game marks the return of five players who were called up for national team duty: Kellyn Acosta (USA), Tesho Akindele (Canada), Maynor Figueroa (Honduras), Carlos Gruezo (Ecuador) and Matt Hedges (USA).
