FRISCO, Texas – (Saturday, September 2) – FC Dallas went down a goal twice, but battled back twice while playing a man down to earn a 2-2 draw tonight at Toyota Stadium.
First Half Notes:
’15 – FC Dallas held a 60/40 edge in possession in the first 15 minutes of action. Mauro Diaz returned to the starting lineup for the first time since August 5. The No. 10 also wore the captain’s armband for the first time in 2017, looking like the 2016 version of himself, playing a handful of cutting through balls to set up chances and nearly drawing a penalty kick early in the match.
’29 – With five FC Dallas regulars on international duty, Wake Forest product Jacori Hayes made his second start of the season in central midfield. He was shown a yellow card for a tackle on New York’s Connor Lade.
’38 – Hayes was ejected from the match, forcing Dallas to play a man down for the final 52 minutes.
’43 – Red Bull New York took full advantage of the additional man as Alex Muyl played a ball into the feet of forward Bradley Wright-Phillips. The forward quickly laid the ball off for Sacha Kljestan, who cut around the last defender before ripping a hard shot to the upper corner of the goal to the left side of FC Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez to make it 1-0.
’45 – Two minutes later Gonzalez kept Dallas in the match with a diving save, high to his right side on New York forward Sean Davis.
Second Half Notes:
’54 – Wylie native Victor Ulloa regained possession of the ball and launched a pass forward for Michael Barrios. The Colombian ran down the long pass and waited for help to arrive – finally sliding a pass to Hernan Grana at the top of the box. The right back stepped between two Red Bull defenders before slipping a shot between the legs of New York goalkeeper Luis Robles to make it 1-1.
’57 – Aaron Long put New York up, 2-1, after Kljestan lofted a free kick to the far post. The defender headed a lofted shot over Gonzalez’s head and the attempt ducked under the crossbar to give the Red Bulls its second one-goal lead of the match.
’74 – Barrios brought down another long pass and ran at goal before being dragged down in the box by a slide-tackle attempt by New York defender Connor Lade. Mauro Diaz stepped up to take the kick, smashing a right-footed shot high to the left of Robles to make it, 2-2.
‘90+1 – Walker Zimmerman forced a save out of Robles in stoppage-time. The ensuing corner kick was a scramble in front of the Red Bull goal. During the melee, Zimmerman won a second header that rattled the crossbar behind Robles. Unfortunately for FCD, the go-ahead goal would not come and that match finished, 2-2, after three minutes of added time.
