FC Dallas returns to Toyota Stadium vs. Red Bull New York on Saturday, Sept. 2
- Summer transfer from Venezuela, Cariaco Gonzalez makes his MLS debut.
- Walker Zimmerman and Javier Morales connect on corner kick in the 78th minute.
COLUMBUS – FC Dallas went down 2-0 on second half goals by Columbus’ Ola Kamara and Jonathan Mensah, battled back with a late goal by Walker Zimmerman, but ultimately lost, 2-1, to Crew SC tonight at MAPFRE Stadium.
First Half Notes:
9’ – FC Dallas opened the match conservatively, allowing Columbus to possess the ball, while looking for an opportunity to counterattack quickly. With Dallas penned in early, Columbus’ Federico Higuain found Hector Jimenez by spinning in central midfield and delivering a perfect pass out wide. Jimenez looked to pick out a runner with a quick ball in on the ground but FC Dallas captain Matt Hedges recovered in time to cut out the pass.
18’ – The first counter attack for FCD came in the 18th minute, when Carlos Gruezo chested down a clearance attempt in central midfield and immediately struck a ball over the top of Columbus’ back line. Winger Michael Barrios took the pass in stride and tried to beat Crew SC’s Zack Steffen low to his right side, but the goalkeeper was equal to the task and smothered the first shot attempt of the game.
24’ – Hernan Grana found Maxi Urruti in the middle and Dallas’ leading goal scorer slipped a pass through for Barrios midway through the first half. Barrios cut back and found a late-arriving Roland Lamah with a pass in front of goal. The Belgian tried to pick out the post to Steffen’s left side, but pushed his attempt just wide of the frame.
36’ – Kellyn Acosta and Roland Lamah put a few passes together, earning Dallas its first corner kick of the match with nine minutes remaining in the half. The corner did not produce a goal, but led to some sustained pressure. The best chance of the sequence came from Barrios, who ran down yet another long pass, beat Steffen, but not a Crew SC defender, who recovered in time to save the ball from crossing the goal line.
Second Half Notes:
50’ – Columbus took advantage of its best opportunity to go ahead 1-0 coming out of halftime. Higuaín was the orchestrator, slipping a pass through the FC Dallas defense a second time for Jimenez. This time, the winger’s low pass into the center of the six-yard box was finished off by Ola Kamara.
51’ – FCD came close to evening the score just one minute later on a similar play to Crew SC’s goal. Tesho Akindele played the role of Kamara, arriving late and trying to redirect a shot inside the six-yard box past the goalkeeper. Once again, FC Dallas beat Steffen, but a Columbus defender stepped in to knock the shot down and usher it away from danger.
71’ – Columbus added a second goal to increase the advantage to 2-0 on a free kick played into the area by Higuaín. The dipping cross was met with a sharp header by Jonathan Mensah. The defender finished high to the right side of FC Dallas goalkeeper Jesse Gonzalez.
78’ – FC Dallas fought its way back into the match with Hernan Grana earning his team’s fifth corner kick. Substitute Javier Morales curled in a great pass from the flag and Walker Zimmerman rose above the pack to head a ball low into the corner to the left side of Steffen.
83’ – Oscar Pareja brought on Cariaco Gonzalez in hopes that the newest member of the FC Dallas squad could lift his side and even the score. In his debut, Gonzalez immediately earned a free kick for Dallas with his first touch but Crew SC denied FC Dallas of the ball for the majority of the match, snuffing out any chance of a late, game-tying goal.
