FRISCO – While FC Dallas was dealt its first loss of the season this past weekend at home against San Jose, they got some help around the league. Other weekend results around the Western Conference kept Dallas among the conference’s top three teams as the MLS season approaches its summer stretch.
A 3-0 midweek victory by Sporting Kansas City against Seattle lifted Peter Vermes’ team to the top spot in the West. Kansas City could have jumped out to a six-point lead on Dallas and Houston with a victory on Saturday night, but stumbled with a 2-0 defeat at Vancouver.
The Dynamo themselves had a pair of opportunities to join Kansas City as leaders of the West, but lost a pair of road matches at Philadelphia and Atlanta.
Houston is still without a point in five road matches this season. FC Dallas hopes to prolong Houston’s wait for road success this weekend, when the season’s first Texas Derby matchup takes place on Sunday night at Toyota Stadium.
By way of their victory in Frisco on Saturday, San Jose Earthquakes pulled into a three-way tie for second in the conference with Dallas and Houston on 19 points. Portland and Vancouver are the other two teams in playoff position.
Weekend wins from both Seattle and Los Angeles brought each club closer to the final playoff place occupied by Vancouver, although the Whitecaps still hold a two-point cushion over the Galaxy.
Minnesota United, Real Salt Lake and Colorado Rapids all continued to struggle with losses at the weekend, and bring up the rear of the conference picture.
