FC Dallas and Estudiantes played evenly through the first 17 minutes of the match before trading chances at opposite ends of the pitch in a matter of seconds.
Estudiantes pressed up the right wing and found room on the right side of the box before firing a rising shot. FC Dallas goalkeeper Chris Seitz got his fingertips to the shot, sending it over the crossbar for a corner.
Seconds later Tesho pushed the ball forward for Michael Barrios, who took it to the end line and centered a pass into the six yard box. Tesho and Cristian Colman arrived at the pass at the same time, sending a shot just over the bar from close range.
Estudiantes took a 1-0 lead in the 22nd minute on a set piece, from just outside the area. Vargas stepped up to take the free kick and crushed a shot past the left side of the wall that caught the far side netting to put the home side ahead.
The second half began with Colman grabbing control of the ball at midfield, fighting his way past a pair of defenders near midfield and sprinting towards goal. Colman cut back inside the area and had his legs swept by a Estudiantes defender, prompting the referee to point to the spot. Colman took the penalty kick himself, beating Estudiantes goalkeeper Andujar low to his left side to make it 1-1, in the 33rd minute.
Seitz saved the result for Dallas just before the final whistle. On an Estudiantes corner kick, the initial serve popped up into the air for a midfielder to attempt a bicycle kick. The Estudiantes midfielder struck the ball well and the shot lofted high towards the post to Seitz's left. The veteran MLS 'keeper made the save of the trip, diving to slap the ball up and off the post before it was cleared away from danger.

Jesse Gonzalez was called on to punch away a partially blocked shot from the right side in the 25th minute. Walker Hume stepped up to clear away the ensuing corner kick and Dallas was able to elude the extremely high pressure from Estudiantes en route to a 0-0 draw.
