MATCH RECAP: FC Dallas 0, LA Galaxy 0

Point in Los Angeles earns FC Dallas historic “double”

CARSON, Calif. (October 23, 2016) – Two down, one to go. FC Dallas completed an historic “double” on Sunday at the StubHub Center in Los Angeles with a 0-0 draw against the Galaxy earning Dallas the Supporters’ Shield trophy awarded to the top team in the Major League Soccer standings at the end of the regular season.

As part of MLS Decision Day, FC Dallas vs Los Angeles kicked off simultaneously with nine other games across the country including Colorado vs Houston. FC Dallas went into the match knowing a win or draw would secure the Shield along with a Colorado draw or loss to Houston.

FCD started the match on the front foot nearly taking the lead in the 9th minute. A corner kick sent in by Kellyn Acosta made it into the box and Atiba Harris hit it on the bounce. The shot pinged off the post denying FC Dallas an early lead.

In the 19th minute, a quick restart saw Michael Barrios take down a long ball from Carlos Gruezo sending a cross into Tesho Akindele but his shot was barely deflected out for a corner kick.

In a half of few chances, LA nearly took the lead on the stroke of halftime as a set piece sent in by Landon Donovan found the diving head of Mike Magee but his effort was just wide.

In the 60th minute, FCD came close to finding a lead as Maynor Figueroa’s cross was just beyond the head of Kellyn Acosta, the ensuing cross found Carlos Gruezo at the top of the box but his rocket was straight at goalkeeper Brian Rowe.

The final minutes ticked off without any solid chances for either side and with Colorado drawing Houston 1-1, FC Dallas knew a couple minutes before the final whistle that they had secured the Supporters Shield for the first time.

FC Dallas ends the 2016 regular season with a 17-8-9 record good for 60 points. This is the second-straight season FC Dallas has attained 60 points, the first time in MLS history any club has done that.

Oscar Pareja’s side now will wait until Thursday night to determine their Western Conference Semifinal opponent as the Western Conference knockout round games take place on Wednesday and Thursday. Dallas will travel to a TBD opponent for leg one on Sunday, October 30th at a TBD time.
