CCL: How MLS Clubs Have Fared in Recent Years

Five MLS teams have qualified for the 2016-17 CONCACAF Champions League and will look to become the first MLS side to win the annual tournament since the current format began in 2008. Sporting Kansas City, the Portland Timbers, the New York Red Bulls, the Vancouver Whitecaps and FC Dallas will all learn their group stage opponents on Monday night and in anticipation of the 2016 draw, we decided to look at how MLS teams have performed in the CCL recently.

In 2010-2011, Real Salt Lake played Monterrey in the CCL Final, after beating the then-Columbus Crew in the quarterfinals and Saprissa in the semifinals, but came up short and fell, 3-2. You can watch a video of the game's highlights here. Despite the loss, it was still the first time an MLS team made it to the region's championship final since 2000, when the LA Galaxy won the CONCACAF Champions Cup - CCL's predecessor.

In 2011-2012, FC Dallas made the tournament as MLS Cup Runners-Up, but did not make it out of the group stage. Toronto FC, who did make it out of Dallas' group, beat LA Galaxy with an aggregate 4-3 score in the two-legged quarterfinals, but couldn't handle Liga MX side Santos Laguna, who advanced on a 7-3 aggregate score. You can watch the highlights of the first leg between Toronto at LA here, and the second leg here.

In 2012-2013, three MLS teams made it to the quarterfinals - the Houston Dynamo, the Seattle Sounders and LA Galaxy, with the Sounders and the Galaxy advancing on to the semifinals. Neither side was able to punch their ticket to the Final as the Sounders fell 2-1 to Santos Laguna, while the Galaxy lost 3-1 to the eventual champion Monterrey. Here's a video of highlights for the Sounders, and here's one for the Galaxy.

In 2014-2015, América beat the Montreal Impact, 5-3, in the CCL Final match to win their sixth title, which you can watch here.

América made it a two-pear in 2015-2016 after MLS sides D.C. United, LA Galaxy, Real Salt Lake and Seattle Sounders FC fell in the quarterfinal round. América, however, did not qualify for this year's tournament and will not have a chance to defend their title.

The 2016-17 CCL Draw will be held on Monday, May 30th, at 7 p.m. CT and you can keep up with everything CCL at FCDallas.com/CCL!
