Generation adidas Cup: FC Dallas 1 (4), San Jose Earthquakes 1 (2)

FRISCO - FC Dallas remains atop Group C through Day Two of the 2014 Generation adidas Cup after beating the San Jose Earthquakes in a shootout. The winner was decided via penalty kicks after the two sides played to a 1-1 draw through regulation.

San Jose jumped out to an early lead after a free kick service into the area led to a scramble in the FC Dallas box that ended with forward Pablo Gervacio scoring the opening goal in the second minute.

The Earthquakes continuted to put on the pressure in the early stages of the match, earning another free kick and two corner kicks in the first 10 minutes of the game, but could not build on their lead.

FCD started to build some possession midway through the half, developing a quality scoring chance just before the break. Juan Ramirez chased a ball down the right touchline, sending a last-second cross into the box that was side-volleyed by forward Christian Ramirez, but the shot was saved by San Jose goalkeeper Kevin Perez.


FC Dallas turned up the heat in the second half, and the pressure paid off in the 57th minute. FCD earned a free kick from the right flank just outside San Jose's penalty area. Christian Ramirez sent in a well-placed ball and Juan Pablo Monticelli rose above his marker for a game-tying header. The match ended in a tie and was decided in a shootout per tournament rules.

San Jose's JT Maricnkowski sent his shot over the crossbar in the first round, but FCD's Caleb Young had his shot saved in the second to enter the third round tied 1-1. Quakes 'keeper Kevin Perez hit his shot off the right post in the next round to give Dallas the 2-1 edge. Both teams scored in the fourth round, and Christian Ramirez coolly finished in the fifth round to clinch the win for the home side.


FC Dallas was awarded two points in the standings for the win while San Jose earned one point from the shootout result. FCD will wrap up group play with a match against Chivas de Guadalajara on Thursday at 4pm on Field 4 at Toyota Soccer Center.
