SMU community practice special for Hyndman, Nunez

DALLAS, Texas - With so many connections between FC Dallas and SMU, Tuesday’s community practice at Westcott Field was always going to be a special day.

On the field where Schellas Hyndman coached and a handful of FCD players developed their careers, the team began on-field preparations for Saturday’s big match against Los Angeles and the event didn’t disappoint.

“26 years here, I’ve worked and seen a lot of really good things happen,” Hyndman told “It’s great to be back. You’re in a place for so many years, you develop a lot of really good memories and you develop a lot of really good friendships. SMU’s a place I love. I always will and it was great being here tonight.”

Ramón Núñez spent just one successful year on the hilltop before Dallas selected him in the first round of the 2004 MLS SuperDraft, but that didn’t make Tuesday’s practice any less of a homecoming for the midfielder as he works towards a return to the field.

“I think it’s nice for several reasons,” said Núñez. “One, because I had a great time at SMU. Another reason is the fans get to watch us train, which isn’t every day and for us it’s motivating to have them around to see us train. They’re a big part of what we do.”

A mix of college students, professionals, families and friends showed up for the first community practice of 2013 with the FCD Girls handing out t-shirts, FCDrum banging out some beats and a post-training autograph session.

“We feed off the fans, and if the fans feel that closeness to us it’ll show in the games at the stadium,” said Núñez. “We love doing stuff like this.”

Of course, there was also the all-important practice, which, according to Hyndman, was held with no problems on the Westcott Field pitch.

“There are a lot of fans who support us that are unable to travel all the way up to Frisco on a day like today dealing with traffic,” said Hyndman. “So for us to go out in the community and have a good practice on a beautiful field and not really change anything we normally do in training is great.”
