Hyndman: defense strong, work to do on offense

FC Dallas was challenged on Sunday against Sweden’s AIK said head coach Schellas Hyndman.

The defense fared well, according to the coach. There’s still work to be done on offense.

“On the defensive side we were productive. Offensive side we weren’t. Not enough chances and we didn’t score,” Hyndman said on Tuesday about the scoreless draw.

Hyndman said he discussed in pre-game with his players the importance of creating scoring opportunities and then finishing them. Hyndman felt like neither one of those things happened to his liking.

FCD had some chances in the first half, but was unable to convert.

Hyndman said it was apparent FCD is still learning its way around the new 4-4-2 formation it will be using in 2013.

But working through the challenges is part of this preseason tournament.

“We’re playing good teams,” Hyndman said. “It shows your vulnerabilities and things you have to work on.”

Hyndman, however, was very pleased with FCD’s defense and goalkeeping.

Chris Seitz played the first half and Raul Fernandez played the second. Hyndman said the play of both ‘keepers was “really good.”

For the first time this preseason, FCD had both its suspected opening day central defenders in the line-up. George John and Matt Hedges played well according to Hyndman, who also complimented the play of sub Stephen Keel.

FC Dallas has training on Tuesday in Portland and will face the Timbers Wednesday at 9:30 p.m. CT at JELD-WEN Field. The match will be streamed live on FCDallas.com.
