Finals Week: U-18s advance to national championship

The FC Dallas U-18 Academy team defeated Florida’s Weston FC 4-1 on Wednesday to advance to the U.S. Soccer Development Academy 2011 Under-17/18 championship game. FCD midfielders Daniel Garcia and Flavio Guzman and Home Grown players Bryan Leyva and Jonathan Top each scored in the victory that helped Dallas to seven points through Finals Week to win Group Two.

The two teams matched up evenly in the early stages of the first half, with each side producing quality scoring chances that went unconverted. That changed in the 28th minute when Leyva fed a pass to Garcia, who fired from the left flank into the upper right corner of the goal past Weston goalkeeper Carlos Catano.

Dallas doubled the lead just before halftime when defender Kellyn Acosta, also a member of the U.S. U-17 Men’s National Team, collected the ball in the corner and lofted it into the box. Acosta’s cross found a leaping Top, who nodded home the pass to give FCD the 2-0 edge.

FC Dallas found their third goal almost immediately upon the restart, when Leyva worked around the Weston defense to get a shot off in the 46th minute. His shot bounced off the crossbar, but Leyva collected his own rebound and buried his second attempt to make the score 3-0.

Weston FC’s lone goal of the tournament came in the 64th minute when second half substitute Alex Valle caught the FC Dallas defense by surprise and broke into the box to fire a shot past goalkeeper Eduardo Cortes.

Dallas closed out the match in stoppage time just moments before the final whistle, when forward Victor Pinal sent a pass to Guzman that he finished to seal the 4-1 victory for FCD.
